Coupling of dimethylsulfide oxidation to biomass production by a marine flavobacterium.

چکیده
Dimethylsulfide (DMS) is an important climatically active gas. In the sea, DMS is produced primarily by microbial metabolism of the compatible solute dimethylsulfoniopropionate. Laboratory growth of Bacteroidetes with DMS resulted in its oxidation to dimethyl sulfoxide but only in the presence of glucose. We hypothesized that electrons liberated from sulfur oxidation were used to augment biomass production.

متن کاملKinetics, Mechanism and Product Yields in the Atmospheric Oxidation of Dimethylsulfide
Dimethylsulfide (DMS, CH3SCH3) produced by phytoplankton degredation is thought to be the major source of the sulfate and methanesulfonate aerosol found in the marine boundary layer. An understanding of the mechanism of formation of these aerosols is critical in evaluating the factors which control visibility in the marine boundary layer. The primary objective of this research effort is to dete...
متن کاملInhibition of Ammonia Oxidation in Nitrosomonas europaea by Sulfur Compounds: Thioethers Are Oxidized to Sulfoxides by Ammonia Monooxygenase.
Organic sulfur compounds are well-known nitrification inhibitors. The inhibitory effects of dimethylsulfide, dimethyldisulfide, and ethanethiol on ammonia oxidation by Nitrosomonas europaea were examined. Both dimethylsulfide and dimethyldisulfide were weak inhibitors of ammonia oxidation and exhibited inhibitory characteristics typical of substrates for ammonia monooxygenase (AMO). Depletion o...
متن کاملBiomass production, antioxidant capacity and removal of nitrate and phosphate by marine microalgae Tetraselmis tetrathele cultivated in food wastewater
This study was conducted to investigate the cultivation of Tetraselmis tetrathele in food effluent and the effect of different concentrations of effluent on specific growth rate, biomass, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total carotenoids and comparing them with Conway medium. Meanwhile, in this experiment, the percentage of phosphate and nitrate removal from food effluent by T. tetrathelewas eval...
متن کاملRelating temporal and spatial patterns of DMSP in the Barents Sea to phytoplankton biomass and productivity
Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), produced by many marine phytoplankton, is the main precursor of the climate relevant gas dimethylsulfide (DMS). Currently, it is generally accepted that the relationship between DMSP and phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll a), while not representative of the absolute magnitude of the DMSP pool, is a good indicator of ecosystem structure. In this study we tes...
